Organizations Using Social Media

February 1, 2010

Our second class assignment required us to look at the Social Media Case Studies SUPERLIST and pick three case studies to talk about.

The first one that caught my eye to read was the Ignite Social Media list of 26 Media Marketing Examples in Detail. It only really caught my eye because my brother used to work for Ignite Social Media, but I enjoyed the list either way. I enjoyed this because the author of the post picked one corporation for each letter of the alphabet, and wrote about how well she thought they were doing in the social media world. She picked companies such as Best Western, IKEA, Taco Bell, Victoria’s Secret, and Yoplait. I was really surprised at how poorly some of the places were when it came to dealing with Social Media, and I was pleasantly surprised at how great of a job some of the other places did. Taco Bell has a Twitter and a Facebook fan page, but does not really seem to use them. IKEA on the other hand has a Twitter and Facebook page, as well as things on their website such as virtual planners and live support chat.

The second one I read was the Twitter Brand Index and I was not as impressed with this list. I was however blown away by just how many companies are on Twitter. It was shocking to see so many of my favorite stores are on Twitter. This whole time they’ve been offering coupons and deals for their followers and I have missed out on! I was also shocked at the lack of restaurants that are using Twitter however. I think that most places are really missing out by not using Twitter. They could easily tell followers about specials of the day, promotions going on, or even upload pictures of their delicious food but it seems as though not many eating establishments have caught on to this idea yet. I really enjoyed reading this list though because I had no idea so many people were using Twitter.

The third one I read was Non-profits that Tweet and was about 26 charities and non-profit organizations that are on Twitter. I think it is a fantastic idea for charities to use on Twitter because it allows them to send quick inspirational messages out daily. It also is an easy way for them to share updates or stories that they are mentioned in. It is also a good place for people to ask questions about their organizations. I am pleased to see how many charities were on Twitter, and that they all are thriving. I think there will be many more non-profit organizations using Twitter in the near future because it seems like a such a great way to get more people interested in them…for free!

I think the same could be said for most organizations. Being active with social media now is crucial for companies, and if they aren’t in the social media loop they better get started!

I just went to check out Twitter Brand Index and was pleasantly surprised to see the lists of businesses currently involved with Twitter. Although I was almost against Twitter before this semester I have actually come to really enjoy it, not because I want to let people know what I’m up to but because it alerts me to a lot of things I was unaware of before now.

Now with Twitter I can get updates on the latest Social Media trends as well as news updates and other information that I would have missed out on otherwise. I love getting updates from Mashable about new articles on social media, and places like Starbucks advertising their newest ideas.

I’m definitely with you on this one, restaurants are missing out if they aren’t using twitter and gathering a “fan base”. If my favorite restaurants kept popping up on my Tweet Deck I would certainly be more enticed to go there. Hopefully they’ll catch up soon!
